about

Farhad and Anna have been musical collaborators and friends since 2017, and met for the first time on Manus Island in 2018 where they set up a small studio. For a week in the month before curfew on Manus, this studio became a place for people to drop in and have tea and popcorn. Farhad held impromptu acoustic performances and Anna got to spend time with men who shared recipes, talked of the day and shared news. There was laughter, generosity and some hope behind tired, resilient eyes.

Farhad and Anna use phones and the internet to send files and create works. Phones are vital to the social and emotional wellbeing of refugees. It is well documented that a decline in self-determination and wellbeing is likely to lead to mental health issues. Australia’s policies and practices toward vulnerable populations is steeped in systemic racism. People are not getting the help that they need. The threat of no phones is terror.

In an early musical collaboration, the moving piece Far From Home, field recordings were incorporated from Manus and Australia into the fabric of a heartbreaking lament for freedom. Over the last couple of years Farhad encouraged Anna to get back to her musical roots of rock, and together they’ve worked on a few tracks. This song Freedom is a poetic and charged account of indefinite detention. The personal is political, friendship and connection is vital and rock is the bird beating its wings to get out of this cage.

lyrics

Freedom

They take our breath
They take our time
Steal our lives, for no crime
Walk with us, hold our hands
Through the fence, on stolen land
There is no sense, there is no plan
These tears the heart, of every one
Walk with us, hold our hands
Through the fence, on stolen land
Policies twist the knife
We are fighting for our lives
Sick and hurt, you cannot see
Don’t turn away just let us free
In 2013 we swam for our lives
Through the dark night
Waves like the mountain of time
Come to take me to freedom
Freedom
Locked in a jail, there’s only sky
We Call on hope to save our lives
